Job Description:

The Pastor of Adult Education is responsible for equipping and empowering God’s people to do His work at First Baptist Church. This position will lead and oversee all key adult discipleship initiatives of the church, including small groups, Bible studies, and specialized classes.  He will also provide spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and a welcoming environment for congregants to explore their faith.

Responsibilities 

  • Develop First Baptist Church Sunday School classes, Connection Classes, and other small groups as the primary avenue for the spiritual growth for members
  • Work with the Teaching Pastor to develop a vision, goals, and benchmarks for the Discipleship Ministry
  • Continually recruit, train, empower, and equip small group leaders to disciple others
  • Develop qualified leaders within the Discipleship Ministry to share in ministry responsibilities, fostering strong relationships and spiritual growth
  • Meet regularly with the Teaching Pastor to address ministry strategy and pastoral care
  • Oversee the Singles Ministry
  • Network with other church leaders and ministries to determine best practices for church ministries
  • Plan and implement ministry programs and events
  • Available to periodically conduct weddings and funerals
  • Assist in worship services as requested
  • Oversee the staff and budget for the Discipleship Ministry
  • Ability to teach groups of all sizes

Qualifications 

  • A clear testimony of personal faith in Jesus Christ and an ongoing desire and effort to grow more Christ-like in character
  • Agreement with the doctrinal statement of FBC (Baptist Faith & Message 2000)
  • Consistently strive to maintain the leadership character qualifications as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7
  • An approach to ministry centered on the Bible
  • Possess a strong belief in and extensive knowledge of God’s Word
  • Willingness to serve God and others rather than a desire to be served
  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth in a wide variety of ministry areas
  • Strong people skills and the ability to relate well with the staff and church members
  • Ability to manage long-term projects
  • Proven skills in small group ministry contexts, specifically in the areas of group leadership and leader training
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master of Christian Education or Divinity strongly preferred
