JOB DESCRIPTION – MUSIC LEADER

 

Position Summary:  The Music Leader of First Baptist Church is a part-time position (20 hours per week) that exists to collaborate with pastoral staff in leading meaningful worship each week and in providing ministry outlets for those interested in music.  These ministries help children, youth and adults grow in their spiritual and musical abilities through praising God.  Specific music ministries may include:  a weekly community-based Children’s afterschool music program (Take Note); Chancel Choir; Praise Team and Adult Handbells.  The First Baptist Church of Midland Music Leader desires to help all, including those to whom we minister, grow in spiritual maturity, and provide mission and ministry opportunities for every age group.

 

Requirements:

  • A passion for Music Ministry
  • Excellent people, organizational, time management and communication skills
  • Trained and/or experienced in music with ability to teach and train others musically
  • Trained and/or experienced to use voice and instrumentation (i.e., piano, guitar) in leading worship service and directing various musical choirs
  • An ability to recruit, lead and motivate volunteers
  • Social media and worship technologies experience and skills
  • Have a passion for worship and a vibrant prayer life and personal Bible time walking with the Lord

 

Expectations:

  • Proficient in a leading instrument; keyboard instrument preferred
  • Facilitates and works in a collegial style with staff
  • Possess exceptional skills as a musician and to lead others musically
  • Welcomes and accepts persons with diverse theological beliefs – “soul freedom”
  • Compatible with the direction and vision of the congregation
  • Follows a model of Christian living that people in the church and community can identify and respect
  • Balances this part time position with any other non-First Baptist Church employment responsibilities

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provides opportunities for congregants and community members of all ages to actively participate in music through the leadership of ensembles which could include: Children’s Choir, Chancel Choir, Praise Team, and Chancel Handbells
  • Leads with the support of volunteers, the Take Note after school music program for children of the church family and of the community
  • Collaborates with Lead Pastor and lay Worship Ministry members, meeting regularly to plan worship services, contributing supportive music ideas and knowledge of worship technologies
  • Purchases music and maintains the music library
  • Coordinates special music events
  • Provides leadership during congregational corporate worship through meaningful traditional and praise music
  • Identifies and schedules maintenance of musical instruments of the church (pianos, handbells, pipe organ), with support of the Worship Ministry

 

Financial:

  • Adheres to positional assigned budget
  • Assists in controlling expenses of First Baptist Church

 

Staff Member:

  • Effectively partners with Pastoral Staff, Office Personnel, Pianist, and other mentors to carry out the vision, mission and core values of First Baptist Church of Midland, Michigan.
  • Observes and upholds ordinances, Bylaws, and policies and procedures adopted by First Baptist Church of Midland, Michigan
  • Cooperates with other local churches in appropriate ecumenical efforts
