Job Description:

Tri-State Fellowship (TSF), an Evangelical Free Church in Hagerstown, MD, is currently looking for a youth pastor to lead the Student Ministries.

Located in scenic and historic Western Maryland an hour northwest of both Washington and Baltimore, TSF is a contemporary and multi-generational church of about 500 attendees for Sunday ministries.

TSF desires to have a multi-generational community of theologically-sound believers with the distinctives that they are disciples of Jesus Christ who are 1) Grounded in the Word of God, 2) Gathering as Worshipers, 3) Growing in Biblical Community, and 4) Going to the World.

Our desire is for the Youth Pastor to be a valuable team member of our pastoral staff and leadership team who is passionate about partnering with, encouraging and supporting families in making disciples and developing spiritual leaders. It is our vision that the church be an active partner with families as they shepherd their children in their faith and point them to Jesus Christ. While the Youth Pastor will help shepherd the entire church body, the position will have a focus on pastoring and shepherding high school and middle school teens and their families.

Overall Position Description:

  1. Overall Vision - Provide shepherding and leadership of the TSF ministry to the entire student population (middle school and high school), parents, and youth volunteers including teaching, leadership development, casting ministry vision, purpose, planning, goal setting, selecting study materials, etc.
  2. High School Leadership - Personally oversee and coordinate the senior high ministry, including Sunday morning and evening (youth group meeting time); plan, coordinate, and oversee discipleship strategy; and generally invest in the lives of the students of TSF.
  3. Team Building - Recruit, train, mentor and disciple youth leaders and volunteers, particularly with those having the primary hands-on and regular leadership of the middle school. This will involve developing and encouraging a leadership team that may include regular group meetings, one-on-one appointments, off-site conferences, team building events, and outings.
  4. Parental Resourcing - The Youth Pastor will partner with parents to resource, support and encourage in the disciple-making and spiritual formation of the youth. Partnership includes providing resources that helps equip parents through offering teen parenting-oriented classes/seminars, teaching materials, parent information meetings, and regular communication through varied channels.
  5. Special Ministries – In partnership with the other pastoral team, plan, promote, and execute special ministry trips, conferences, retreats, and special events. The valued summer ministry history of the TSF is for students to attend the National Youth Conference of the EFCA on even-numbered years and a missions trip on odd-numbered years.
  6. Relationships and Mentoring - Build a leadership and volunteer team that will prioritize personal and discipleship-oriented relationships with students with an interest and investment in their lives at school and in the community.
  7. Staff Connections – Serve as a valuable member who contributes to the overall ministry of the pastoral team. In coordination with the Lead Pastor, serve with the preaching team for the church body. Work with other staff to seamlessly integrate student ministries into the life of the whole church family, participating in staff meetings, board meetings, etc. Our Youth Pastor will shepherd and actively participate in the life and ministry of the entire TSF Church body.
  8. Model Church Values - Creatively implement church-wide values in the Student Ministries including the 4 Distinctives of Tri-State: 1) Grounded in the Word of God, 2) Gathering as Worshipers, 3) Growing in Biblical Community, and 4) Going to the World.

Characteristics Desired in a Successful Candidate:

The Youth Pastor will have a love for Jesus Christ as they are maturing in their faith modeling character described in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Galatians 5:22-23. The individual’s passion for Christ will overflow into all their other ministries. We desire a candidate with sufficient theological aptitude to understand, teach, and implement the biblical truths and values consistent with the doctrinal position of TSF and the EFCA.

We desire a relational, humble and teachable person who can recruit, train, and inspire other leaders as they serve our youth. The candidate is a self-starter, maturing in their faith and who will be able to both plan and execute an extensive program for students. Our hope is to find someone whose passion for youth is a conviction and calling of life. Ministry should be seen in partnership with families, with a high priority on team culture and fit with the other pastoral and leadership team.
