Led by a dynamic ministry team, our congregation has an average attendance of about 130 on Sunday mornings, and is located in a desirable area with easy access to the Jersey Shore and the excitement of NYC. We are an intergenerational congregation whose worship services are consistent with the Reformed tradition and our affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA).

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Youth Ministries is responsible for developing and leading the congregation’s ministry with adolescents in grades 5-12. This position will help kids and students engage in the life and ministry of the church by providing a variety of mission, fellowship, and educational opportunities throughout the year. This will include activities such as our summer Youth Mission Trip and Confirmation Class. 

The Director of Youth Ministries will collaborate with the Christian Education Committee on program development and congregational engagement in youth ministry and is supported by the Mission & Outreach Committee in all service-related activities. Programs for 5th-8th graders under the direction of the Director of Youth Ministries are complemented by those of the Director of Family Ministries, whose responsibilities for Church School and midweek programming include this age group.

Reporting Lines: The Director of Youth Ministries reports to the Pastor, is accountable to Session through the Personnel Committee, and relates closely with the Christian Education Committee which is responsible for youth and children’s programming.

Hours: This is a Part-Time (exempt) position, approximately 20 hours per week, which includes regular Sunday morning hours. Vacation days and Sundays off will be negotiated as part of the compensation package (see below).

 

Key Duties And Responsibilities

Program Development

  • Direct the Middle School Youth Fellowship (Grades 5 – 8). Offer regular fellowship nights supplemented by occasional offsite special events.
  • Coordinate the High School Youth Group (Grades 9 – 12). Develop regular opportunities for high school youth to gather and be together. Encourage youth leadership and ownership of the group. Support the Chatham High School Baccalaureate service in June of each year.
  • Administer and lead the Confirmation Program (typically Grade 9). Support, guide, and collaborate with the volunteer teaching team in leading Sunday morning classes. Coordinate and lead Confirmation and service projects, including one off-site overnight retreat. Ensure curriculum choices are consistent with the Reformed tradition and help prepare students to be confirmed.
  • Organize and run the annual Youth Mission Trip (Grade 9 and above). Identify and secure housing and work sites, arrange transportation, coordinate fundraising efforts, lead the youth planning team, recruit adult leaders, develop and stay within a budget, and coordinate participant recruitment efforts.


Leadership and Communication

  • Identify, train, and support volunteer adult leaders.
  • Invite and support parental involvement as appropriate.
  • Foster a spirit of collaboration
  • Provide consistent and timely communication for all program areas, keeping parents and students informed of upcoming events and deadlines.
  • Develop publicity materials for bulletins, e-blasts, and the church website. Collaborate with the Director of External Communications and other staff to publicize youth ministry events and opportunities.
  • Design meaningful youth programs that keeps kids and students regularly engaged


Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide a loving, inclusive, creative, and positive environment for young people across all program areas.
  • Engage kids and youth in mission projects. Provide service opportunities as a regular part of Confirmation and ongoing community building.
  • Support students in their development as the next generation of Christians.
  • Collaborate with the Christian Education Committee in calendar planning, budgeting, and long-range planning. Support the committee’s work and join their meetings.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings as available

 

Compensation

  • Compensation will be based upon experience, with a range of $18-27/hour
  • As a part time role, vacation days and Sundays off will be negotiated.
