Job Description:

Purpose: The Associate Pastor supports the mission of First Baptist Church through partnership with the Senior Pastor to steward the worship, discipleship, and outreach life of the church. The Associate Pastor will have special focus over ministry to children, youth, and families.

Supervision: Serving as a Called Staff Member, the Associate Pastor reports directly to the Senior Pastor who works in collaboration with the Church Council.

Position Hours: Full-Time

Compensation: Salary commensurate with education and experience

Benefits: 4 weeks of vacation (including Sundays) a year; health insurance stipend; 403(b) employer-sponsored retirement plan; housing allowance exclusion; continuing education funds

Responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with the Senior Pastor in providing spiritual leadership to the congregation
  • Share in the ministerial duties of worship leadership, administration of ordinances, visitation (to the sick, shut-in, bereaved), meeting with those in need of comfort and counseling, and engaging visitors
  • Support and participate in the preaching, teaching, and worshipping life of the church, including regular scheduling in the preaching calendar rotation (preaching at least 4 times a year)
  • Assist the Senior Pastor in overseeing and leading Sunday School and Bible Study opportunities
  • Encourage and support both internal and external fellowship and outreach efforts and events
  • Intentionally cultivate personal relationships within the congregation
  • Grow professionally through reading, studying, visiting conferences, and trainings
  • Assist Church Staff with general graphics, social media presence, website, etc.
  • Attend staff and church meetings as directed by the Senior Pastor
  • Participate in denominational, ecumenical, and community affairs as requested by the Senior Pastor
  • Perform duties of the Senior Pastor as appropriate in times of vacation, illness, or other absence
  • The Associate Pastor will have special focus on the pastoral care, ministry to, and discipleship of children, youth, young adults, and families:
    • The Associate Pastor is not required to lead Children’s Ministry every Sunday, serve as the Youth Group leader, etc., but is responsible for ensuring adequate lay leadership, volunteers, and staffing
    • Oversee the recruitment, training, encouragement, and supervision of nursery workers, Children’s Ministry leaders, teachers, and other family ministry volunteers
    • Oversee curriculum, lessons, and activities across multiple classes and ages
    • Assist the Senior Pastor with Children’s Moment in worship
    • Ensure the children’s space is decorated for thematic connection/inspiration
    • Foster community partnerships, especially with W.D. Richards Elementary School
    • Promote and oversee administrative elements of summer camps
    • Implement and oversee security procedures including background checks, registration systems, etc.
    • Maintain Children’s, Youth, and Family Ministry budget and financial accountability
    • Organize, lead and attend various church meetings to advocate for children, youth, and families

Job Skills/Requirements/Experience:

  • Be a dedicated Christian who fully believes in the mission, vision, and culture of First Baptist Church
  • Professional experience in ministry and/or working with children, young adults, and families
  • Bachelor’s degree in ministry, theology, education, or a related field
  • ABCUSA ordination recognition or willingness to go through ordination process
  • Demonstrate a life of discipleship, prayer, and piety
  • Spirit of humility, spiritual maturity, and leadership
  • Welcoming personality, team player, responsible, and self-motivated
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage, organize, delegate, and motivate volunteers
  • Proficiency in the use of computer systems and software
