The Lead Pastor of Maranatha Bible Church (MBC) shall be a maturing disciple of Jesus who is dedicated to the study of the Bible, to prayer, and a man who is dedicated to serving Christ in the local church by equipping the saints for the work of ministry.
The following job description is a general outline of the major duties of the Lead Pastor. It is not intended to be all-inclusive. Nor is the listing of an item below intended to indicate that the Lead Pastor has the exclusive responsibility for that item.
Vision and Leadership
- The Lead Pastor will be committed to prayer by seeking God’s face to discern the direction that God is calling MBC.
- Encourage a culture of prayer and lifelong discipleship within MBC’s congregation and leadership.
- Accountable to the Board of Elders and will attend Elder meetings to provide and receive input and feedback.
- Lead, supervise, and coach pastoral staff and ministry directors in all areas of ministry.
Preaching and Teaching
- The Lead Pastor will be the primary Sunday morning communicator and is responsible for preparing and delivering an engaging and relevant, Christ-Centered weekly sermon so that gospel-oriented, biblical truth is taught and applied to transform lives, while collaborating with the Worship Pastor to unify each Sunday worship experience, and crafting an expository preaching calendar.
- Devote significant time to the study of scriptures and to personal prayer time
- Other qualified men may periodically fill the pulpit under the direction and coaching from the Lead Pastor.
- The Lead Pastor will participate in, and occasionally be asked to lead, Sunday morning Equipping Hour gatherings as availability and desire dictate.
Pastoral Care
- Provide pastoral counseling, prayer, and support to individuals and families in times of crisis and need.
- Conduct special events such as weddings, baby dedications, funerals, and baptisms as needed.
- Shared responsibility with pastoral staff and elders to visit hospitals, nursing homes, and homes of congregation members to offer spiritual care.
Qualifications (equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Biblically qualified as an elder, in keeping with 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.
- Aligns theologically with MBC’s Statement of Faith
- Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in pastoral ministry and church leadership.
- Strong preaching and teaching skills, able to communicate Biblical truths in a clear and compelling manner.
- Demonstrated ability to cast vision, lead, and mentor a staff and congregation with love, compassion, and humility.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability and desire to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to work effectively with multiple teams within the church, along with strong conflict resolution skills; able to receive criticism that may not always be warranted while pursuing peace as much as possible.
- Committed to growing in personal discipleship to Jesus and ongoing professional development.
- Bachelor’s degree in theology, Biblical studies, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
