About 19th Street Baptist Church

Nineteenth Street Baptist Church is embarking on a comprehensive search for a nurturing and dedicated Senior Pastor to guide our congregation with strong theological acumen, visionary leadership, and a profound commitment to spiritual excellence. We are seeking applications from highly qualified candidates who can articulate a compelling vision for our church’s future while fostering a deep sense of community and spiritual growth. Our church is renowned for its rich tradition of worship, robust educational programs, and impactful outreach initiatives. We look forward to welcoming a leader who can elevate our congregation’s faith journey and strategic direction.

Nineteenth Street Baptist Church (Nineteenth Street) has served Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia suburbs and communities around the world for 185 years. The church was founded as The First Colored Baptist Church of Washington City almost a quarter of century prior to the Emancipation Proclamation by a group of dedicated Baptist ministers and laypersons on August 29, 1839. The church was later incorporated on November 16, 1870, as the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church. The church remained on the corner of 19th and I Streets NW for 135 years until it moved, January 26, 1975, to its present location at 4606 16th Street NW.

The mission of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church is to profoundly experience, joyfully celebrate, and meaningfully share God’s grace. We do this through Christ-centered worship, biblical instruction, prayer, nurturing fellowship, and caring acts that are reflective of our love for God and one another. We, through the power of the Holy Spirit, proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people while supporting the work of missions in our church, our community, our country and the world.

During its spiritual and physical growth, the church has had dedicated and dynamic leadership. The ministers to lead Nineteenth Street include Rev. Dr. Walter H. Brooks, Rev. Dr. Jerry A. Moore Jr., Rev. Dr. Derrick Harkins, and Rev. Dr. Darryl Roberts.
