Lead Pastor

Stromsburg Baptist Church is searching for a lead pastor to come alongside a
team of elders to help shepherd our congregation in Stromsburg, Nebraska. SBC
is a small Baptist church in the rural Midwest with over 150 years of faithful ministry.
We are largely an agricultural economy with an active and safe town full of life
and loyal community members. Our congregation of around 120 can be
described as conservative evangelicals who believe in the supremacy of Jesus
Christ, are faithful to the great commission wholly believing in Grace alone, Faith
alone, Christ alone, the Bible alone, and for God’s Glory alone. We’ve adopted a
new constitution this year (2024) which has changed our governance to a local
congregation lead by a plurality of Elders which seems to us to be the model
outlined in scripture. We do value our history and tradition as a church, but our
ultimate commitment is being led by the Spirit and the Apostles’ teaching when
ordering ourselves rightly as God intended. Someone with a conservative
theology, expositional preaching, a passion for the gospel & discipling the flock, a
willingness to lead as ‘first among equals,’ and above all a commitment to God’s
living and active Word as the only infallible rule of life and worship will be a good
fit for this position.

HISTORY

Stromsburg Baptist Church (SBC) has deep roots with the earliest tracings back to 1873 where a group of Swedish American settlers started ‘The First Baptist Church’ in Stromsburg. Later in 1895 English speaking Baptists created ‘The Eden Batist Church.’ In 1932 the two churches became one and changed their collective name to ‘Stromsburg Baptist Church,’ as we are still named today. In the over 150 years of SBC’s faithful living out of the great commission, we have had an impact, by God’s grace, on countless lives and we pray that in the years to come we will continue to be devoted to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer (Acts 2:42)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Overview

The lead pastor will serve with a group of elders and will be responsible for the preaching and teaching of the Word of God, the shepherding of His flock, and the oversight of church functions in accordance with our biblical doctrines.

Qualifications

• Degree in theology, divinity, or a related field preferred. We recognize a diploma doesn’t necessarily mean competency, but we want to see a deep understanding and ability to teach God’s Word, not neglecting any of the doctrines contained within.

• Preferred prior experience working with an elder-led congregation in accordance with 9-marks principles

• Meets the qualifications of an elder in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.

• Agrees with the doctrinal statement and constitution of SBC

• Competent in basic administrative tasks

• Holds firmly to the supreme authority of scripture as the only infallible rule in life and worship.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Biblical Preaching

Prayerfully prepare and deliver expository, exegetical, and Gospel- centric sermons. Sermons should point people to Jesus, be faithful to the text, and be crafted in such a way as to disciple Christians and reach those who do not yet believe.

Faithful Fellowship

Pursue spiritual growth in community for himself and with his family. Pursue other ministry areas in accordance with interests and giftings, such as counseling, administration, outreach, small groups, etc.

Devotion to Prayer

We recognize the invaluable worth of the Holy Spirit’s intercession on our behalf to our Holy Creator and want to be a Church marked by our commitment to prayer. We see a healthy congregation as one who is constantly in prayer. (Ephesians 6:18)

Teaching for Spiritual Growth

Willingness to teach doctrine and help bring our congregation into spiritual maturity. We value the entire scope of scriptural doctrine and see it as an inseparable part of discipleship and Christian maturity (2 Tim 3: 16-17).

Spirit Led Worship

Biblical administration of the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper along with cooperating weekly with the worship team to help plan the service.

Support for, and involvement in Evangelistic Missions

A heart and passion for local, national, and global missions. We want to be a church who has a perceptible presence in Christ’s movements worldwide.

COMPENSATION

Salary depends on experience and family situation - range $60-75k+
