Job Description:

Job Summary: The Director of Children and Youth Ministries is responsible for overseeing the Christian education and nurture of children and youth. The director will design programs and activities that foster building and maintaining relationships with God and each other. This position will embrace the church’s mission to develop, lead, promote, and minister to the children and youth of NSPC and the surrounding community.

Accountability: The Director of Children and Youth Ministries is accountable to the church Session through its Personnel Committee. Day-to-day supervision and collaboration are delegated to the Pastor, Head of Staff.

Responsibilities: Ministry at NSPC is shared among the pastor, staff, volunteers, and members of the community of faith. The children and youth director will exhibit a love for Jesus Christ and the desire to help God’s children of all ages grow in faith and discipleship. The gifts of leadership, organization, creativity, administration, and the ability to be a team player will enable the Director to create opportunities that nurture faith and discipleship of children, youth, and their families.

Specifically, the Director will:

  1. Develop, direct, and administer programs for children and youth.
  2. Communicate with parents on a regular basis, in regard to activities and ministry opportunities for children and youth. Encourage their support and participation.
  3. Work closely with the Chairs of the Christian Education and Children and Youth Commissions to create programs and events that appeal to children, youth, and families.
  4. Oversee the Sunday school and nursery staffing. This includes distributing classroom materials to the teachers, taking attendance, supporting teachers as needed, and finding substitutes to teach if necessary.
  5. Direct Vacation Bible School and recruit volunteer leadership and teachers as needed.
  6. Plan and execute periodic events for children and youth, such as Trunk or Treat, Palm Sunday procession, Easter Egg Hunt, graduate recognitions, retreats, and service projects.
  7. Lead a Youth Sunday each year, including developing a theme and preparing the youth for their participation in worship.
  8. Lead Youth Group during worship most Sunday mornings.
  9. Prepare and deliver the children’s message each Sunday during worship (children and youth leave for Sunday school and youth group after the message).
  10. Plan, staff, conduct rehearsals for, and execute the Family Christmas Pageant.
  11. Write a monthly column in NSPC’s newsletter and prepare bulletin announcements and/or inserts, flyers, and social media posts that announce programs and events for children, youth, and families. Prepare an annual Children & Youth Ministries brochure.
  12. Submit a monthly report to the Session and attend both Christian Education and Children & Youth commission meetings.
  13. Work with the pastor and Finance Committee to prepare and manage the annual children & youth budget.
  14. Connect regularly with families and youth using phone, text, and/or e-mail.
  15. Attend all church events that include children and youth of the church, along with events held for nursery school families.
  16. Perform other related duties as directed by the Pastor.

Qualifications:

  1. Must have a passion and genuine love for children and youth, and feel called to serve at Newtown Square Presbyterian Church.
  2. Must have a deep and growing relationship with Jesus Christ and a desire to nurture spiritual growth in the lives of children and youth.
  3. Must exhibit the gift of communicating the Good News of Jesus Christ to children and youth in imaginative and creative ways.
  4. Must exhibit exceptional skills in oral and written communication, organization, administration, and leadership.
  5. Must be a team player and work well with the Pastor, volunteer leadership, children, youth, and adults.
  6. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  7. Must possess a strong and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  8. Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree or work experience in Christian Education, Education, or a related field. Demonstrated experience working with children and youth is preferred.
  9. Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Canva, and social media.
  10. Should be knowledgeable about Sunday school curriculum and products available for children and youth ministry.
  11. A background in the Presbyterian Church (USA) is preferred. Upholding the theology of the Church is required.
  12. Must be flexible and able to meet deadlines.
  13. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Compensation:

This is a full time, non-ordained position. We offer a competitive salary of $50,000+, commensurate with skills and experience.

About our church:

NSPC is a thriving 300+ member church.  During the past ten years, we have grown significantly in membership and in giving. Our children and youth ministry programs have flourished, bringing in many new families over the past ten years. We offer a full range of programming to all ages. 

Our program staff includes an Office Manager/Co-treasurer who has served at the church for six years, as well as a Music Director who has served for seven years. Our Sunday school teachers are dedicated to their craft and are certified and/or experienced teachers.

During Covid, we completed a 5,000 square foot addition and building renovation. Our mission events, Bible studies, fellowship groups, and rentals have welcomed many people from our community. Our NSPC Preschool, led by two committed church members, welcomes over 100 families into the church building on a weekly basis.

There are 300 active members, an average worship attendance of 120, and approximately 50 children enrolled in our pre-K through 8th grade Sunday school. Our high school youth remain in worship and serve as worship leaders.
