Our Area – Angola is a town within Steuben County Indiana with a population of just over 9,000 residents. It is the home of Trine University. Steuben County has 101 lakes and is a great vacation town with tons of things to do. We are also only 45 minutes from Fort Wayne.

Our Church – Founded in 1992, SonLight Community Church is part of the FEC, Fellowship of Evangelical Churches. We are a church of 160 and growing. We have between 6-10 youth (6th-12th grade) and 25-35 children (1st-5th grade) on a given Sunday. We feel God is bringing SonLight to the next level and our youth and children’s ministry will be a vital part of that.

Our Opportunity – SonLight is seeking the right candidate to be our Next-Gen Pastor. This person will have a deep personal life in Christ and the character and capacity to align with the church’s overall mission and vision. They will be passionate to teach biblical truths to the Next Generation of the church, with the ultimate goal of leading our children and families to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, become baptized and grow in their faith and Christian walk.

Below are the responsibilities and qualifications the church has identified for this role:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the ministries of children and youth from K-12th grade.
  • Help grow church attendance by creating and implementing a strategy that draws families into the church through Next-Gen ministry.
  • Pray for, recruit, lead, observe, evaluate, develop and encourage teams of volunteers so that they are operating in their strengths, growing in areas of weakness and being most effective in their roles. This includes, but is not limited to, times of fellowship, training, and spiritual growth.
  • Evaluate current curriculum and select and implement new curriculum if needed.
  • Provide Sunday morning support for teachers and volunteers.
  • Pray for and minister to families and aid in connecting what happens on Sunday morning with what happens at home.
  • Be willing to assist in the discipleship of the parents of the Next-Gen children and students.
  • Be relational and present in your ministry role. This is done by actively interacting with parents, youth, and children. As part of your hours, attending sports and other school functions is a must.
  • Plan activities and events to foster relationships between families in the church and community for children’s and youth ministries.
  • Plan and attend winter and summer overnight events for youth which could include camps, retreats, conferences, and mission trips.
  • Make connections with people and organizations outside the church to partner with to reach the community.
  • Be a model for those who attend SonLight Community Church by being an example of personal integrity, discipleship, and evangelism.
  • Be the primary teacher for youth group (6th-12th grade meet 6:30-8pm Sunday nights) meetings.
  • Oversee budgets for youth and children’s ministry.
  • Attend all weekly staff meetings and events.
  • Communicate with church leaders and the congregation regarding the purpose, value and procedures of children’s and youth ministry.
  • Preach 4-6 times per year as needed.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in youth ministry or biblical studies preferred.
  • Candidates should have 2 or more years of previous ministry experience.
  • Be a strong believer in Christ and spiritually mature.
  • Passionate about raising the Next Generation of kids with families in the church, people in the community, and volunteers.
  • Able to build a team that leads the Next-Gen by inspiring others to serve on the team.
  • Driven to reach kids and youth who do not know Christ by being relevant and providing a great space for them to connect with other kids, youth and leaders.
  • Be dynamic and creative in relaying biblical truth to the Next-Gen students.
  • Be an advocate for connecting with parents and equipping them to be the leader of their child’s spiritual development.
  • Be willing to get licensed through the FEC within the 1st year of hire.
