First Broad Street UMC is a faith-filled community in Kingsport, TN. With mission at the heart of their DNA, the church supports the local community in practical, needs-meeting ways. From the firewood ministry to halo haircuts, which provides haircuts to low-income individuals, this congregation is a true neighbor to its neighbors. Connection is highly valued at FBSUMC, as also demonstrated through their common education hour, which takes place between the traditional and contemporary worship services.

About the Ministry

This position will be a part of the Growing Together team of staff that oversees the faith formation from birth to graduation. The Director of Student Ministries will work with young people in middle and high school alongside a seasoned team of volunteers. A collaborative team, the staff works together to ensure consistency of programming as children and youth move through the stages of the ministry program. Currently, the middle and high school students are engaged in the ministry on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights.  

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate to be the next Director of Student Ministries will have a passion for mission that aligns with the values of FBSUMC and a passion for building relationships that are faith-filled with students, families, and an entire church community.

Key Responsibilities

- Build relationships with youth and their families.

- Develop a student ministry with continuity in mind from 6th – 12th grades, providing a solid framework for life-long discipleship as a Christian.

- Encourage youth to take the next natural step in their journey of Christian discipleship, including involvement in worship, leadership, and educational opportunities.

- Recruit, train, and support adult volunteers to disciple and provide spiritual care and programming for youth.

- Be an active leader and participant in the life of the church, including worship, church-wide events, and other programs. 

Qualifications

- Possess an individual faith/relationship with Jesus Christ and a desire to live out your faith in Christian community

- Have 1-3 years of experience with student ministry in a multi-staff setting

- Demonstrate experience and relational skills with middle school and high school youth

- Exhibit relational and leadership skills for working with volunteers and being part of a team ministry

- Hold a willingness for understanding of and commitment to United Methodist doctrine
