Job Description:

Ministry Description Summary

The Senior Pastor works in harmony with the Staff and Leadership Team (Elders, Deacons, Coordinators, Ministry Leaders, etc.), understanding and supporting the beliefs, mission, values, and strategy of Mt. Lassen Community Church & Mt. Lassen Theatre. The Pastor’s primary responsibilities center around what is outlined in Ephesians 4:11-12 and 1 Peter 5:2-3. As Pastor, he strives to glorify God in everything by providing ministerial oversight through shepherding the flock in spiritual and relational growth by modelling what it looks like to love God and love people.

Salary: $70,000 - $85,000 DOE, plus negotiable stipend for benefits and housing.

Spiritual, Character and Leadership Development & Growth

  • Demonstrate a stable, mature Christian walk, reflecting the requirements of a Pastor (1 Timothy 3:1-7; 2 Timothy 2; Titus 1:5-9): above reproach, self- controlled, gentle, not greedy, hospitable, able to teach the Bible, a faithful husband and effective father
  • Exhibit the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
  • Feed & nurture his spiritual gifts of leadership, shepherding, and teaching/preaching
  • Live out a commitment to prayer and the study of God’s Word
  • Lead by a servanthood example of love (agape), forgiveness, mercy and grace (Eph. 4:32; 5:1-2)
  • Be passionate about BOTH the Great Commandment (Matt. 22:36-39) and Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20)

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Preaching and Teaching:

  • Devote significant time to studying the Word of God and prayer
  • Oversee the planning, organization, and implementation of all corporate services; lead in the observance of ordinances and sacred rites
  • Prepare and deliver biblically sound, relevant, and engaging sermons and teachings on the full counsel of God in the Word of God
  • Prepare and distribute weekly to leadership Order of Worship for Sundays Services, as well as necessary slides, sermon notes, other multimedia and Sunday bulletins.
  • Oversee and administrate schedule of weekly Bible studies and Home Groups, including review, recommendations and monitoring of all curriculums
  • Lead and facilitate Bible studies and educational programs

Pastoral Care:

  • Provide pastoral care and counseling to leaders and congregants
  • Visit ailing or burdened members and congregants with the assistance of staff and ministry leaders, including those who are hospitalized and having critical surgeries
  • Conduct weddings, funerals, baptisms, and other special services
  • Train other leaders and congregants to care for others (via sermons, personal training, discipleship and future programs like “The Stephen Ministry”)
  • Provide & assure grief care via pastoral ministry and GriefShare ministry and other programs

Spiritual Growth & Development:

  • Lead by example in spiritual growth and Christian character
  • Devote significant time to studying the Word of God and prayer
  • Encourage and facilitate discipleship and spiritual development within the congregation
  • Assure scope & sequence of Christian education and spiritual growth from cradle to the grave, including surveying and overseeing all educational curriculums
  • Assure spiritual growth in all areas, including prayer, Bible study, worship, fellowship, biblical stewardship and communication/conflict resolution
  • Serve as a resource person and advisor to the congregation as well as leaders of various Church ministries and committees
  • Coordinate with the other Elders the process of membership and church discipline; conduct quarterly new member classes and reception Sundays

Leadership and Vision:

  • Cast and oversee (with the other Elders) the vision, mission, and direction of the ministries of Mt. Lassen Community Church and Mt. Lassen Theatre; Work with leadership each year to develop and implement the Church and Theatre’s vision and
  • Provide leadership (with the other Elders) in selecting, enlisting, and training qualified persons for Church & Theatre leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Church staff and ministry leaders
  • Serve as head of staff and oversee weekly church and theatre staff meetings
  • Oversee and support church and theatre leadership (with the other Elders) as they perform their assigned responsibilities and ministries
  • Assure provision of each staff member a job or ministry description and a personnel manual which will include, among other things, a review of the general expectations of employees, an overview of employee benefits, and grievance Also serve on Personnel Board (with other Elders) to administrate annual employment reviews and recommend salary, benefits or staff changes to be approved by the Elder Board.

Administrative Duties:

  • Serve and support church administrative staff, functions, financial & stewardship growth, and fundraising
  • Coordinate (with the other Elders) monthly meetings, membership meetings and the annual meetings, including a January Leadership Summit
  • Prepare and administer (with other Elders and Treasurer) an annual financial forecast (budget) to be communicated at each Jan. Leadership Summit
  • Uphold and abide by the Church’s Constitution and By-Laws, and monitor (with the other Elders) that members, leaders and congregants are as well
  • Ensure compliance of Church & Theatre with all federal and state laws and biblical requirements

Community Outreach:

  • Engage with and assure connections and servanthood outreach to the mountain communities and beyond
  • Oversee and encourage Gospel outreaches through the entire Church ministries, including the mission of Mt. Lassen Theatre
  • Cooperate with other leaders and paid staff to accomplish the Church and Theatre’s purpose and mission in both discipleship and outreach
  • Equip congregation in apologetics and evangelism in culturally relevant ways
  • Encourage congregational and personal Gospel outreach and evangelism
  • Build good relationships with other community leaders and pastors
  • Foster relationships with other local organizations and Christian churches
