The role of the Worship Pastor is to lead the congregation through worship, lead all aspects of Highlands’ musical worship team, and service order planning. This role will also collaborate with the Directors of Production and Media to create engaging worship services that glorify God, encourage people to grow in their relationship with Christ, grow in community, and live on mission throughout the week. This position will require a firm grasp of Highlands’ beliefs, values, and strategy, and the ability to align key leadership teams to execute the mission, vision, and values. Highlands Next Gen Worship Leader staff members will report to this position.
The Worship Pastor will be responsible for duties such as:
- Service Planning
- Select, arrange, and lead music to support and enhance the biblical focus of the weekend’s service, as well as encourage a high level of engagement and participatory singing
- Align music programming with other weekend service elements (production, media, etc.), as well as implement creative elements to enhance weekend services
- Oversee the creation of screen lyrics in collaboration with the media team that are clear and accurate
- Oversee the production of weekly music technical elements including any click and backing tracks
- Collaborate with teaching pastors to unify the overarching themes of each service based on that week's message.
- Lead times of corporate prayer integrated with musical worship
- Plan and lead worship for special non-weekend events as determined by the executive leadership team.
- Collaborate in team planning for special event services at Christmas and Easter, leading and overseeing the musical elements of those events
- Worship Team Supervision and Development
- Assemble worship teams (bands, vocalists, etc.) by recruiting volunteers, and auditioning and placing them appropriately
- Model and implement Highlands “LIFE” culture into all worship teams.
- Lead Worship Team in effective rehearsals
- Lead, train, equip, and shepherd the Next Gen Worship Leader staff members at Highlands (these staff lead worship for young adults and students).
- Collaborate with Family Ministry to encourage and develop young musicians, providing them regular opportunities to contribute to the overall musical worship of Highlands
- Recruit, train, mentor, mobilize and schedule volunteers, developing volunteer leadership roles within the worship team
- Recruit and lead a choir for special event presentations as needed (Christmas, etc.)
- Lead worship team volunteers toward spiritual health and integrity
- Pray for and maintain regular communication with worship team volunteers
- Other Pastoral Duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong communicator and encourager of volunteers
- Maintain a humble and sincere attitude on and off stage
- Great attention to detail in scheduling and planning
- Committed to a growing personal relationship with Christ through spiritual disciplines, daily Bible study, prayer, and quiet time with God.
- Maintains a character above reproach, leadership style, and lifestyle as depicted in scripture (1 Tim. 3).
- Collaborate with other Worship Leaders to identify best practice policies and procedures for more effective and efficient worship services.
- Excellent verbal communication skills adaptable to both church and unchurched audiences
- Participating in a Highlands Church small group or discipleship group on a regular basis (may include small group, accountability group, discipleship group).
- Setting appropriate boundaries to protect character and integrity.
- Developing personal evangelism opportunities both within and outside the church.
- Supporting the ministries of Highlands Church by regularly attending and faithfully giving financially.
- Adhering to and encompassing the culture-shaping behaviors, qualities, and characteristics required of Highlands Church employees, as defined by the Employee Handbook.
- Engaging leader with a strong biblical background who agrees to be governed by the Highlands Bylaws and to comply with the tenet statements contained in them (Statement of Purpose, Statement of Faith, Covenant of Fellowship, and Statement on Marriage and Sexuality).
- Affirms a commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Values of Highlands Church.
- Ideally lives within a 30-minute drive of Highlands Church.
- If married, their spouse must fully agree with their desire to serve the Lord as Worship Pastor of Highlands in Scottsdale, AZ.
- Must become a member of Highlands Church.
Musical Qualifications:
- Strong vocal leadership abilities and a stage presence that encourages congregational participation
- Proficient in one or more musical instruments that are used in modern worship contexts
- Ability to train others as individual and team worship leaders
- Wide-ranging musical vocabulary of styles, with a focus on modern worship music including and/or similar to Passion, Elevation, Hillsong, Worship Initiative, etc.
- Professional instrumental ability including basic keyboard and guitar skills.
- Strong grasp of music theory concepts, vocal ranges and harmonization
- Ability to evaluate and place vocalists and musicians in the right combination as a team to enhance the quality of worship services
- Comfortable arranging music through chord charts and lead sheets, as well as occasional traditional music notation
- Experience with production equipment and its operation: (mixing consoles, in-ear monitors, lights, media, etc.)
- Experience in using production software including ProPresenter and Ableton
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in music, or other related field as well as Bible coursework or equivalent parachurch Bible training
- Has a minimum of 3 years of experience as a worship leader in a church of over 1000, with a proven track record of effective leadership and judgment
- Proven record in programming and leading musical worship experiences, clear communication skills, and tech implementation
STANDARDS FOR PERFORMANCE
Formal performance reviews will be conducted by this position's supervisor and reviewed with the Executive Pastor annually. Performance evaluations will be based on measures of Character, Competency, Chemistry, and Culture as defined in the Highlands Church performance evaluation matrix.
