Calvary Fellowship of Juneau Senior Pastor Job Announcement
Calvary Fellowship of Juneau, a Calvary Chapel affiliate, is a non-denominational church in Juneau, Alaska, and is looking to hire a full-time pastor. Juneau, the state capital, is located in Southeast Alaska and is home to around 30,000 people. Being
the Capital, we have a strong local, state, federal government, and military presence. The economy of Juneau is largely based on the tourism industry, construction, commercial fishing, and mining. Juneau is surrounded by stunning ocean and mountain views,
miles of hiking trails, fishing or hunting opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast, and is accessible only by plane or ferry. While there are many perks to living in Juneau, Southeast Alaska is not an easy place to live; the winters are dark and the weather
is what would be expected of a temperate rainforest. However, on a sunny day, it’s nearly impossible not to think of Psalm 121:1-3 as you stare in wonder at the beauty of the mountains.
Calvary Fellowship was started in 1981 by Mick Ewing as an outgrowth of a coffee house/street ministry. In 1995 Brian Ewing became Pastor and has continued in this role serving our body and community ever since. We currently have a congregation of believers who are committed to fellowship, love, and grace. While the demographics of our church are mixed, we primarily consist of early to mid-career families with young children. Our body is composed of a strong core of consistent and committed attendees alongside a 3-4 year turnover cycle of families and attendees due to the transient nature of community dynamics in Juneau. We find this as an opportunity to build these people up in the Word and then send them out into the world having added a bit of Calvary Fellowship Juneau spark. Southeast Alaska, and Alaska in general, is filled with strongly independent and driven people, which, if focused correctly, can be a great asset to the Church but also presents its own unique opportunities and challenges to ministry.
Throughout the history of Calvary Fellowship Juneau, we have met in a number of locations. Our most recent model was to meet in local public schools. However, since COVID this model has changed and we currently meet on Saturday nights at a local Baptist church. While we don't (yet) own our own space to meet on Sundays, we do own a small house (we call it the ‘Calvary House’) for midweek meetings, and an adjoining 2.5 acres of undeveloped land. Meeting on Saturdays is not ideal, and we are continuing to seek the Lord for an opportunity to meet on Sunday. Regardless of our physical location, we are a church body that seeks the filling of the Holy Spirit and prioritizes fellowship and prayer.
As a church body, we are looking forward to the man who will continue to build on our solid foundation while leading us into the future. We intend to support a full-time Pastor, with a starting salary dependent on experience but no less than 70k per year. We ask that interested candidates who have reviewed the Calvary Distinctives by Chuck Smith, feel that they meet the following qualifications and characteristics, and are willing to assume the responsibilities outlined below, please send their resume, 3 references, a link to 3-5 recent sermons (if available), and your testimony (video format preferred) to cmccalvaryjuneau@gmail.com.
We will begin reviewing applications on August 15th, 2023. Resumes will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.
General Qualifications and Characteristics
First and foremost, we are seeking a man with a shepherd's heart who is filled, empowered, and led by the Holy Spirit; who is continually seeking the Lord’s guidance in his daily walk. We are seeking a man who exhibits a vibrant walk with Jesus
Christ demonstrated by faith, passion, grace, and maturity. We recognize that no one man can or should meet all of the needs of the congregation, or possess all of the competencies/expertise desired. We are looking for someone who is willing to listen, is
open to input, recognizes his own shortcomings, and can
lead others well. This man should be driven to encourage, mentor, develop, empower, and delegate to others who are uniquely gifted and talented, all while maintaining a balance of Godly oversight without micromanaging. In addition to meeting the biblical qualifications
of an elder as outlined in Titus 1 and 1 Timothy 3, we are seeking a man who will also possess the following qualifications and characteristics:
Responsibilities
Calvary Fellowship’s mission is to walk with new and growing Christians, helping, training, and challenging them as they grow in the knowledge of Jesus. We empower. We challenge and commission healthy Christians to take their hope into the world. We encourage. We seek to restore exhort and provide support to those who are weary from service.
