Job Description:

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH

Job Title: Director of Music

Reports To: Senior Pastor

Position Status: Full Time/30-40 hours

 

Purpose: Provide and support the worship ministry at TLC through effective planning, coordination, and implementation of the music program while developing and implementing a vision for the music ministry in conjunction with the Worship team.

 

Responsibilities

  1. To ensure musical support for the congregation’s worship services:
    1. Schedule choirs, instrumentalists, special ensembles, or vocalists. This includes coordinating special music at Sunday worship services and special services.
    2. Schedule choirs, instrumentalists, special ensembles, or vocalists for special worship services including, but not limited to: Advent midweek, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lenten midweek, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, community Thanksgiving.
    3. Coordinate with Worship Team and Pastors to select hymns.
    4. Assist the congregation in learning new hymns and liturgical settings.
    5. Provide musical needs at funerals and weddings as requested.
    6. Provide supervision to the Church Organist.

 

  1. To develop choirs as a means of enhancing congregational worship:
    1. Direct the Chancel Choir, Praise Team and Bell Choir. This includes all rehearsals and services at which those choirs are leading worship.
    2. Direct or obtain volunteer leader for additional choirs or ensembles based on the Director’s individual qualifications and skills (handbell choirs, children’s choirs, and others as needed).
    3. Review all music selections.
    4. The Director of Music, together with active music ministry participants, will actively recruit adult and youth members of the congregation to be part of the music ministry.

 

  1. Ensure that musical programs provide a meaningful worship experience for the congregation by communicating with the pastors, staff, and Worship mission team:
    1. Attend weekly TLC staff meetings
    2. Maintain scheduled office hours
    3. Attend Worship team meetings.
    4. Attend annual TLC staff retreat
    5. Provide input to preparing annual budget
    6. Select and purchase music for organ, choir, and other musical ensembles within the established budget.
    7. Monitor the condition of the organ, pianos, and other equipment used by music ministry. Report deficiencies and service requirements to the Worship team. Coordinate servicing.
    8. Work with the pastors and office staff in the timely submission of music-related information for weekly bulletin and congregational communications.

 

Special Notes

  1. The Director of Music and the Worship team are responsible for finding a supply choir director when the Director of Music is on a scheduled absence.
  2. The Director of Music may not take vacation during Christmas Eve, Holy Week, or Easter Sunday.
  3. The Director of Music is encouraged to attend and host workshops, seminars, and retreats that will enhance the music ministry of TLC. Such efforts will not be considered vacation. The Continuing Education budget will be used to fulfill these endeavors.
  4. The Director of Music shall be permitted to use the church facilities for private music lessons. (The use of the facilities and equipment is considered in the compensation package.)
  5. The Director of Music will help coordinate the Wednesday evening program, providing needed musical activities
  6. The Director of Music will assist with the music of Vacation Bible School.

 

Job Skills & Requirements:

  • Knowledge of traditional & contemporary music.
  • Ability to lead choirs, ensembles and other music groups.
  • Ability to work with experienced and less experienced people in music ministry.
  • Knowledge of the Lutheran Church is preferred, matching appropriate keyboard music with the themes of the Church Year.
