Pleasant View Church is a 200+ member congregation located in Jefferson Township, IN. With over 80 years of history in the community, the congregation has experienced a more recent period of renewed vision and corresponding shifts in such areas as worship, governance, and facility arrangements. This season corresponds with explosive growth of the Township, doubling in size in 20 years to 11,000+ residents. Strategically located at the crossroads between Goshen, Middlebury and Elkhart, over 150,000 Elkhart County residents live within 12 miles of the church. Recent surveys reveal that 1/3 of the surrounding community has no church connection and 1/3 are loosely connected to a faith community. There is no lack of opportunity for outreach and discipleship all around us. One of the meaningful ways we have made a difference this past year is by beginning a deaf ministry which has included a summer camp as well as staffing interpreters at worship and youth events.
A member of Evana Network, Pleasant View Church comes from the Anabaptist tradition, and is a former member of Mennonite Church USA. In 2015, it joined with other like-minded congregations to form Evana Network, a group of Evangelical Anabaptist churches that are passionate about reaching their community for Christ. Our renewal process has resulted in affirmed five shared theological values as follows
The congregation represents a mix of ages and backgrounds, with ¼ of the membership being 70 and older. Over the past seven years, the congregation has seen a growing spread of ages and backgrounds, with more new attendees arriving from the neighborhood. Membership demographics are economically diverse with strong representation of blue collar, education, medical and middle management fields.
Leadership is structured with a single Board, made up of seven members (including a moderator, 3 at-large elders, a stewardship elder, a lay shepherding member, and the Lead Pastor). Current staff structure includes a lead pastor, worship arts director, office manager and custodian(s). There has always been a strong participation in traditional Sunday offerings of Sunday School and Sunday Worship. Also, most adults are involved in small groups that meet throughout the week. Our congregation offers multiple special events throughout the year to engage the community, including a Community Carnival and a Swiss Steak supper.
Following the mantra “Honor the Past, Embrace the Future,” Pleasant View completed a building project in 2021 that replaced the oldest part of its campus with modern flex spaces to be used by youth during the weekend and made available for community use throughout the week. With no city center, Jefferson Township has many needs that can be addressed by our location and facility, which is already designated as a storm shelter, overflow for the school, and county polling location.
While we are located in a more suburban/rural location, Pleasant View also has a long history of global missions engagement, whether pastoral staff has served overseas, or international students studying at the local seminary or college have attended and served. We also have a high value on supporting missionaries who have connections back to our own congregation.
In short, Pleasant View Church is located in an area that is ripe for outreach. And we have a core group of believers who deeply love Jesus and their neighbors. With recent changes and current vision, the congregation is stepping into the next chapter God has for them and the community.
