A large Protestant congregation in suburban Fort Wayne, IN is looking for an experienced administrative leader with gifts in accounting (especially fund accounting) to serve as FT Director of Finance & Administration (responsible for finance, accounting,
HR & working with outstanding facilities team). Competitive compensation offered per training/qualifications.
Job Summary: Provides strategic leadership to the administrative and financial life of the congregation by applying best financial/accounting practices and Biblical stewardship, maintaining buildings/grounds in consultation with the Trustees,
and performing overall work per direction of the Senior Pastor. Provide a solid business and administrative foundation for First United Methodist Church.
Responsibilities:
- Closely interacts with the Finance Committee, Board of Trustees (facilities and grounds of the church and parsonages), Endowment Committee, Scholarship Committee, and Gifts & Memorials Committee
- Work in partnership with the Senior Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) to fulfill the mission of First UMC, assist in the development of action plans, and see that the effectiveness of ministry is measured.
- Work with the SPRC and Indiana Annual Conference staff to see that we participate in pension/medical insurance programs.
- Serve and lead as a senior member of the church staff, in consultation with the Senior Pastor.
- Work with the Finance Committee to oversee the fiscal functions of the church, insuring that appropriate and accurate accounting and membership records are maintained. Work with the staff to monitor contributions and expense levels in accordance with financial
policies and procedures. Direct an annual financial review/audit during the first quarter of the calendar year, and supervise all staff related to financial, stewardship, and endowment areas of First UMC.
- Coordinate the development and preparation of the church budget.
- Assist the Senior Pastor and laity (Finance/Stewardship Team) in developing an ongoing program of stewardship education, regular reporting to the congregation of special causes/missions supported by First UMC, and repeated ways of thanking the congregation
for its faithful giving.
- Work with the First UMC Endowment Committee in developing a program of planned giving, as well as informing the congregation of the work/projects supported by the committee.
- Work with the Trustees and relevant paid staff to ensure the facilities are well maintained and properly insured.
- Oversee building scheduling, rental agreements, and rental billing/payments
- Provide support, working with and through the Building Supervisor, to the Trustees and other relevant groups who have responsibility for the grounds and facilities.
- Maintain a close working partnership with the Senior Pastor concerning key areas such as strategic planning, vision building, staff development, etc.
- Accountable to the SPRC for annual evaluation and leadership development.
Time Required: 40 hours weekly, Monday through Thursday; other hours are more flexible
Qualifications/Special Skills: A genuine love for Jesus Christ and the local church or, if a non-believer, someone who understands, respects and supports the mission and ministry of First UMC. Integrity, accuracy, experience in payroll and
fund accounting, leadership and administration, either inside the church or in the business/non-profit world. A coachable, flexible and proactive leader with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. A willing team player with the ability to
encourage and inspire. Ability to handle confidential matters with integrity. Ability to relate to all types of members as well as volunteer staff, paid staff and clergy.
