OVERVIEW
The Associate Pastor of Discipleship will join our pastoral team, helping to shoulder the responsibilities in our church of discipling, leading ministries, counseling our congregants, leading staff, and teaching God’s Word. This role will oversee small group
and discipleship ministries, as well as other specific ministries as assigned by the Lead Pastor. If the successful candidate for this position has a developed a spiritual gift of preaching, to a level satisfactory by our elders, they will normally be provided
with certain preaching opportunities, as determined by the Lead Pastor. It is desired that the successful candidate will have proven, seasoned, godly shepherding experience, as well as a passion to pastor and shepherd the people of God in a team setting with
humility, and a commitment to sacrifice and service.
Position status
Full Time, Salaried-Exempt.
Supervisory Relationship
Reports to the Lead Pastor.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To fulfill their mandate, the Associate Pastor of Discipleship will focus on key areas of ministry as follows:
- Discipleship Ministries
Adult Small Groups
- Provide leadership to Adult Small Groups Ministry, including:
- Rethink and perhaps redefine small group ministry
- Provide oversight to small group administration
- Recruit, train, and disciple small group leaders and small group coaches
- Be available as issues arise to provide care and discipleship
- Shepherd and disciple small group coaches
- Promote Small Group Ministry through various channels of communication (emails, face-to-face interactions, etc.)
Men’s Ministry
- Provide leadership to Men’s Ministry either leading it directly or recruiting/training a Men’s Ministry leader
- Ensure Men’s events are planned throughout the year, such as the Men’s Nights, and other events
- Promote Men’s Ministry and events through various channels of communication (emails, face-to-face interactions, etc.)
Specialty Care/Recovery Groups
- Initiate a vision and plan for specialty groups, for example, singles, divorced, addictions, grief, special needs, etc.
- Seek input from other pastoral staff and elders on the direction for specialty care groups
- Research studies and materials for special care groups and provide a recommendation to the elders
- Recruit and train up leaders for care groups
- Implement groups as approved by the elders
- General Shepherding/Pastoral Responsibilities
- Have a love for and involvement in the lives of our church congregation.
- Meet with people, providing encouragement, discipleship, counsel, wisdom, and support, as needs arise and as time allows.
- Carry out basic Biblical counseling to individuals and couples, as needs arise.
- Help assess, analyze and refine all teaching and discipleship ministries of the church as well as supporting new initiatives.
- Conduct weddings and funerals as required as a part of normal pastoral duties (legal ordination not required).
- Assist in various other pastoral duties as required and assigned by the Lead Pastor.
- Staff Leadership as Assigned
- Provide senior leadership to staff members as assigned by the Lead Pastor. This includes leading certain staff and their associated tasks, areas, or ministries, providing direction, feedback, encouragement, and correction, where needed.
- Pursuing discipleship relationships amongst the staff - seeking to know, support, encourage, and strengthen them as well as their families.
- Regular meetings with direct reports ensuring their health, sustainability, growth, and care.
- Conduct annual 360-degree performance reviews for all direct reports.
- Provide input and recommendations to the Lead Pastor and elders for direct reports in the areas of salary, vacation, development budget, benefits, etc.
- Help prepare and then track your ministry areas in relation to their budget needs and spending.
- Preaching
- If needed and gifting is evident, preach numerous times throughout the year, in support of the Lead Pastor (dates largely determined based on Lead Pastor’s schedule).
- Preach passages according to the preaching calendar, seeking to be aware and supportive of the passages/sermons that come before and after the assigned passage. Some one-off or single passages by be selected, at certain times of the year (summer).
- Grow and develop your understanding and use of expository preaching skills and techniques.
- Preach expository sermons as your standard/normal approach to preaching.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- This position requires at least 5 years of ministry experience with biblical/pastoral leadership and shepherding, overseeing and leading ministries.
- Proven leader and multiplier who can inspire and share their passion for discipling God’s people.
- Demonstrated attitude and commitment to a team setting, showing both leadership and humble submission to church leadership, and the ability to balance both.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- Personal, growing relationship with Jesus; a strong commitment to the Word of God and prayer.
- Proven and continual commitment to personal, demonstrable humility as well as dependence on God, His Word, and prayer.
- Must meet the biblical qualifications of an elder as found in 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:6-9. The successful candidate will not be on the elder team, but as all our pastors, must meet the biblical qualifications for eldership.
- Agreement with and adherence to the Christ Church Statement of Faith, Mission, Four Pillars, and model of ministry.
- Commitment to The Great Commission Collective (GCC).
- Must be a member of Christ Church, or become one upon employment, and maintain your membership in good standing.
- Possess a deep love and commitment to the local church, meaning the people of the church.
- Willingness to get to know and do life together with other staff and the elders, always seeking to keep short accounts, care for, encourage, respect, encourage, and love each other.
- Be a self-starter with drive and passion, and a continual learner, both in your own process of sanctification and in developing and growing your spiritual gifts.
