JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title:  Communication Director

 

Purpose Statement:  The Communication Manager at Church of the Open Door (“Open Door”) is a leader with passion to effectively and creatively present information and vision to the church body, church staff and the surrounding community.  He/she is enthusiastically focused on Open Door’s mission of Leading People in the Adventure of Becoming like Christ, and on supporting and communicating that mission. He/she is a proven team player and team builder who possesses visionary, team-based leadership that seeks out new, creative, and culturally effective ways to present information necessary in the furtherance of Open Door’s mission.  Above all, he/she is an effective communicator capable of conveying complex ideas to a multi-generational, diverse congregation and staff. He/she is gifted in leadership, creativity, and communications strategies.

 

Reports to:  Executive Pastor

POSITION EXPECTATIONS

 

  1. Live committed to our description of Christlikeness as described in the six Core Christlike Characteristics and summarized by Loving God, Loving People and Living Surrendered.
  2. Live committed to our mission of “Leading people in the adventure of becoming like Christ” by personally practicing the 5B’s.  As Communication Manager you are expected to enthusiastically support, champion and defend the 5B methodology that is our stated strategic plan for achieving the mission of Church of the Open Door.
  3. Participate in all scheduled staff meetings and staff development times.
  4. Meet with the Executive Pastor and other staff for department planning and evaluation.
  5. Assist the other pastors in providing care to the congregation.
  6. Abide by the Open Door employee handbook including staff team values.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Pastor and Senior Pastor.

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Leads the development and direction of the implementation, of all internal and public communications including, but not limited to, weekend announcements, church-wide messaging, external communications media (i.e., print, broadcast, internet, direct mail, etc.), media interactions, other communication tools (i.e., bulletins, pew cards, bulletins, flyers, the Door, etc.), intra-staff communications, comprehensive publicity plans for major church events, and branding continuation.
  2. Leads creative counsel and direction for various ministries of the church as they organize and produce events and services.
  3. Leads or guides messaging as part of video production team.
  4. Guides and connects the staff through internal communications, encouragement, cooperation.  Breaks down and prevents ministry silos.
  5. Recruits, trains, encourages, and develops volunteer teams for engagement in the Communications department including, but not limited to, tasks necessary for the ongoing operation of the print shop.  
  6. Participate on the Worship Arts Creative Planning Team for weekly planning and production of thematically integrated services.
  7. Develop annual ministry plan and budget.
  8. Continued honing of technical proficiency.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The Communication Manager is responsible for and focused on oversight and execution of all aspects of communications, advertising and marketing as outlined below.  Integral to the completion of this list of responsibilities is leadership and team development, along with the direct management of Communications Assistant, contributing to content and graphics. Specific Responsibilities include:

 

 

  • Design & Print

 

  • Oversee all print / graphics jobs, equipment and operations including the oversight of the part-time communications assistant.  
  • Responsible for all print / digital materials including weekly bulletins and bi-monthly publications.
  • Lead efforts to design all art and promotional materials related to church-wide activities with a high standard of creativity, excellence, and effectiveness.
  • Network with volunteers and staff artists to develop graphic designs.

 

  • Websites

 

  • Manage all aspects of Open Door related websites.
  • Lead all efforts to ensure consistency in design and content of websites.
  • Proactively work to make sure Open Door maintains and effective presence on the web including style/presence, search engines, new technology.

 

 

  • Promotions

 

  • Develop system to organize, prioritize, and communicate promotional items related to Open Door.
  • Create communication strategies to market, inform, and promote teaching series, big events, and other campaigns assigned or initiated by the SAT.
  • Oversee all written materials related to promotions including creating content by writing or securing writers.
  • Responsible for editing and proof-reading for accuracy and appropriateness

 

 

  • Social Media

 

  • Grow a social media presence for Open Door including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Manage on-going social media messaging and advertising strategies.
  • Creatively build followings on various social media outlets

 

 

  • Video

 

  • Work closely with Open Door video team to produce creative and effective promotional videos: concept, scripting, video shoots, editing and post-production.
  • Strategize creative tactics to use video to promote and send the message Open Door may want to communicate to the church and to the world. ie:  Adventure and Serve story videos.

 

 

  • Worship Arts

 

  • Create weekly Host Pastor Script for all campus / host pastors of announcements.
  • Develop creative ways to communicate desired announcements within the worship service.
  • Join brainstorm and creative sessions in developing worship series and programs.  

 

 

  • Brand Advocate

 

  • Monitor the look, vibe, feel of all promotional materials representing Open Door.
  • Police the use of logos and images that represent Open Door.
  • Create policies and procedures related to the branding of Open Door and related entities including appropriate style guides.

 

  • Facilities Signage

 

  • Responsible for all external signage including temporary event advertising.
  • Electronic sign content management and approval for all locations.
  • Monitor and update inside signage for all campuses to ensure clear directions for pedestrians.
  • Create consistency in messaging from the front door to the back door.

 

  1. 9. Media Relations
  • Create positive relationships with local media including managing a regular press release schedule.
  • Oversee efforts related to securing or responding to media attention.
  • Develop policy and procedures related to media relations.

 

  1. Volunteer Teams
  • Volunteer teams are critical to the effectiveness of the communications ministry at Open Door, the Communication Manager will develop volunteer teams to accomplish communications goals.  
  • Recruit, train, and care for volunteer such as artists, designers, photographers, reporters, and writers

 

  1. Intra-staff Communication
  • Maintain systems and structures that facilitate excellence in intra-staff communications including calendars, summaries, emails, etc.

COMPETENCIES/SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE OR TRAINING PREFERRED

3+ years experience in ministry and/or professional communication, marketing or creative management role.

Compensation:

This is a full-time salaried position with benefits package. Salary is established by qualifications and experience.

 

Work Schedule:
Approximately 40-45 Hours (Monday – Friday).  The above responsibilities are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. The staff at Open Door is committed to team ministry that pursues excellence with an attitude of “whatever it takes to get the job done”.  Therefore, additional time may be required outside of regular work hours and normal schedules.
