Most of us have experienced an annual review where a manager has gone through various aspects of our job and ranked our performance on a scale of 1 to 5. We all hope for “fives” in every area, indicating that we’ve “always exceeded expectations”. We all hope for that, but are you striving for it?
There’s nothing more a manager wants than an employee who consistently goes above and beyond what’s assigned, and it’s a sure way to make any shortlist when new positions or promotions become available. If you’re always simply meeting expectations, that tells an employer that you’re in the right position – you seem properly matched to the role you occupy. Exceeding expectations, however, tells your boss that you can do more.
If you want to see success in your career, avoid being the kind of person who merely meets expectations. Beat deadlines put extra effort and care into your work, and at every turn, exceed the expectations of your current role. You just may see a new role arise for you.
