Being Detail-Oriented vs. Saying You Are Detail-Oriented

By July 14, 2021December 10th, 2022Interview Advice, Job Search

When writing your resume and cover letter, showing your good qualities is more important than telling. You want your resume to stand out, not because it has several good buzzwords included, but because you show how you stand out among the other applicants. One popular buzzword that I see on almost every resume or cover letter I receive is “detail-oriented.” It’s important to make sure that you’re doing more than simply making a claim. Show how detail-oriented you are via your resume and cover letter.

1. Be Specific.

When listing your accomplishments and job descriptions, give specific examples and include important details that show that you are indeed detail-oriented. If you worked on a major project where the little things mattered greatly, include that as an example. Give examples of how your attention to detail saved a past employer money, improved a process in your work, or made other big contributions to your success and the success of your employer.

2. Take Care of the Details.

Also, it is extremely important to proofread your resume and cover letter carefully to ensure there are no mistakes. If you say you are detail-oriented but your resume and cover letter have mistakes, you will likely not be able to convince the employer that you are truly detail-oriented.

3. Do the Research.

Being detail-oriented means taking the time to familiarize yourself with the details of the position that you are applying to. This will help you when crafting your cover letter and resume. Be sure that you take the necessary time to learn all of the information that you can about the job you are applying for and the organization or ministry that you are hoping to work for.

So, how can you be detail-oriented beyond just your resume?

Being detail-oriented is not something you’re born with, it takes practice! Here are some tips on how to be more detail-oriented throughout your normal workweek:

  • Keep a calendar – Putting a calendar system in place to manage your daily life will ensure that nothing slips by you!
  • Write your tasks down – Break down your projects in smaller bits so that you focus aspect of your task.
  • Takes notes in meetings – Don’t convince yourself that you will remember what was discussed later.
  • Practice Mindfulness – Being in the moment is crucial when it comes to the details. It’s hard to do excellent, accurate work if your mind is actually somewhere else.

In today’s job market, truly detail-oriented employees are extremely valuable since they can make or break a team, and hard to come by. Take the time to follow these tips and set yourself apart from the crowd!
